FTTH Glossary. Terminology used in the Fibre-To-The-Home business:
ADSL – Asymmetric digital subscriber line (data communications technology that enables faster data transmission over copper telephone lines)
ARPU – Average revenue per user
Brownfield – Existing neighborhoods and/or MDUs already served by at least one provider.
BSA – Bitstream Access
CATV – Cable TV
Cladding – The material surrounding the Core of an optical waveguide. The cladding must have a lower index of refraction to keep the light reflecting through the Core.
Core – The central region of an optical fiber through which light propagates from the transmitter.
Coverage – Number of connectable plugs / number of total plugs in the area. As per FTTH Council Europe: Homes passed – as a proportion of Total Households
DSL – Digital subscriber line (technology providing data transmission over the local telephone network)
EP – Elasticity Point (Punkt Elastyczności in Polish)
FBB – Fixed broadband
Fiber – An optical waveguide consisting of a core and cladding that is capable of carrying information in the form of light signals
FLTE – Fixed LTE
FMC – Fixed-mobile convergence
FOC – Fiber optic cable
FTTB – Fiber to the building technology / network
FTTC – Fiber to the curb
FTTH – Fiber to the home (installation and use of optical fiber from a central point directly to individual buildings to provide very high speed broadband)
FTTS – Fiber to the street
FTTx – Fiber to the x (premise, curb, home, node etc.). Refers to a host of acronyms based on taking fiber to the home (FTTH), node (FTTN), curb (FTTC), etc.
FWA – Fixed wireless acccess
G-PON – Gigabit passive optical network
Greenfield – New construction of MDUs and neighborhoods. In this case, no service provider and no broadband network communications exists. Fiber cable system can be planned and placed efficiently while walls, ceilings, basements, and attics are openly accessible to create pathways.
HA – Homes Active. The number of residential and business premises to which a service provider is supplying FTTH services under a commercial contract.
HFC – Hybrid fiber coaxial
HH – Household
HP – Homes Passed. Number of residential and business premises to which a service provider has access to deliver FTTH services within the standard service activation period (for example 30 days) should the owners/occupiers sign a contract for an access service. As per FTTH Council Europe: The potential number of Premises a Service Provider has capability to connect to an FTTH/FTTB network in a service area with minimal additional installation.
HC – Homes Connected. Number of residential and business premises to which a service provider is Ready to supply FTTH services under a commercial contract with no additional installation. Premises connected to the FTTH network with an active subscription or without an active subscription.
ISP – Internet service provider
LLU – Local loop unbundling broadband
MDU – Multi-Dwelling Unit, apartment building, dormitory, etc. when two or more flats/houses are connected in some way – by a wall, garage or deck, or by sharing the same roof
MFH – Multi family household
MNO – Mobile network operator
NG-PON2 – Next generation passive optical network 2
ODF – Optical Distribution Frame\
OLT – Optical line termination
ONT – Optical network terminal
Open Access (Fiber) – Refers to the situation where multiple retail or wholesale service providers may use the FTTH network by connecting at a physical layer (“dark” fiber) interface and compete to offer their services.
OTT – Over the top (streaming media service offered directly via the internet)
PDU – Protocole data unit
Penetration – subscribers divided by the number of HHs in a service area.
POP – Point of Presence (local exchange)
PON – Passive optical network
Premise – A Single Dwelling Unit (SDU), Multi Dwelling Unit (MDU), commercial, or non-residential building that can be connected to an FTTH/FTTHB network.
PtP – Point to point fiber network
Saturation – Subscribers divided by the number of homes passed; see also Take-Up ratio
SDU – Single Dwelling Unit, single house; see also MDU
SFH – Single family household
Subscribers – The number of Premises connected to a network that have subscribed to fiber services
Take-Up ratio – Subscribers to Homes Passed, see also Saturation
UFB – Ultra fast broadband
UKE – Office of Electronic Communications (Urząd Komunikacji Elektronicznej in Polish )
VDSL – Very high bit rate digital subscriber line
VHBB – Very high speed broadband 100Mbps+
VoIP – Voice over IP
xDSL – x digital subscriber line (generic term to designate any DSL technologies (ADSL, VDSL, etc.))
XGS-PON – 10 Gigabit capable passive optical network
